Reader’s Question:

I have been getting very high priced insurance quotes here in  Michigan from multiple companies online and offline. What should I do so that insurance companies will give me lower car insurance quotes? Should I get a lower rate because I am a female?  Do they offer discounts for that?

Geraldine

Detroit, MI

Car insurance companies may be giving you pretty high insurance quotes due to several things. First, you may have a car with a big engine. Having such can affect your car female insurance quote Michigan because car insurance companies regard cars with big engines as a high risk vehicle. When you have a car with a big engine, it means you are at risk of driving fast which can result to you being involved in a car collision. Be content with a smaller car instead because this is less likely to be involved in a car accident.

You should also install security devices on your vehicle so that you can get a lower
car female insurance quote Michigan. Security devices like immobilizers, alarm and brake systems will make your car a low risk vehicle to most vehicle insurers.

Clean up your credit standing and show an impressive credit record. Pay your bills on time so that your credit standing will improve. Insurers like to give discounts to car owners who have good credit ratings since it assures them that these owners will pay their premiums on time.

Reader’s Question:

I am a Swedish national who is based in Hong Kong but is right now living in Detroit, Michigan, for a consulting project which will go on for a year. I would like to buy a car and be able to drive my wife and son around for us to see the country. Is this even remotely possible?

Bjorn

Detroit, MI

We welcome you and your family to the United States of America, Bjorn. And what a fitting question about cars when you are currently in the birthplace and the center of the American automotive industry. Now about buying a car. My answer might sound vague so please bear with me. You did not say a lot about you, whether you have state issued driver’s license or just your license from Hong Kong. Just my two cents’ worth, it is likely that you be allowed to purchase a car while living here for a year. But first and foremost, you must get yourself a license in order for you to get car insurance.

Now, just an unsolicited advice here, all right? Have you thought of looking into car rentals instead of buying one yourself? Unless you’re planning to bring the car back to Hong Kong when your work here is done, then go ahead. But if your objective is just for mobility just so you can drive around the place, I would advise that you visit the nearest car rental companies in Detroit, Michigan because these people offer great packages for long-term rentals. When you’ve done that, go to an auto insurance firm so that you can choose which premium you’d like to take. Enjoy Detroit

Used Car Insurance Rates in Michigan

Reader’s Question:

I’m thinking of buying a used car, and I’m afraid that the car’s previous owner might not be telling me the whole truth about everything the car gone through. He’s planning on moving to the West Coast, and I live here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, so there’s no way of reaching him if anything happens. Is there any way to get his car insurance records? I just want to make sure.

Herbert

Grand Rapids, MI

I’m sure that trying to get a person’s insurance records would constitute an illegal act according to state and federal laws. I wouldn’t want anybody trying to get information about me. I’m sure you wouldn’t that, too. I would consider that an invasion of my privacy. Besides, even if you call the previous owner’s auto insurance company, they’d have no valid reason to give it to you because their obligation is to the previous owner, not to you. As soon as he sells his car, the car insurance company’s responsibility already ends there. But if he’s planning to move to the West Coast, chances are is he may have already terminated his car insurance policy before selling it to you. Some car insurance companies may be able to help you, though, if you explain thoroughly the reason why you want the records. Yours is a legitimate reason, I think. If you are lucky, you may be able to have the previous owner’s coverage and whatever claims he may have made photocopied. Just make sure you ask for information about the car that you’re going to buy and not any other cars that the previous owner may have owned when he was still living there in Grand Rapids, MI.

Does Michigan Transfer My Driving Record to Other States?

Reader’s Question:

I will be moving to AZ from Michigan and I am just wondering if my driving record in MI will be transferred in AZ? Will my auto insurance rates be higher or lower?

Paul

Detroit, MI

According to the Arizona Motor Vehicles Division of the DOT representative, as long as any tickets you had received in Michigan were taken care of before moving in AZ then they should not keep you from getting an AZ driver’s license and they will not transfer onto your new AZ license. So neither the points nor the offense will be placed on your Arizona driving record for previous violation in Michigan.

Whether your particular car insurance rates will go up or down will depend upon different rating factors by the AZ insurance company, such as where the types of cars you have,, you live within AZ, the coverages you place on your vehicles, etc. Also, even though your Michigan driving record does not transfer to your new AZ driver’s license, your insurance carrier will pull your Michigan MVR to help them calculate your rates.

How To Get Cheaper Michigan SR22 Insurance

Reader question:

I’m moving next week and have been getting some preliminary quotes from auto insurance companies for SR22 DUI coverage, and they’re so much lower than my current ones. I mean, I don’t mean to complain, but what happened? How do I make it happen again?

Jaime

Glad you asked, Jaime.

Glad to hear that you were able to get a cheaper SR22 insurance coverage in Michigan. While I can only go by the circumstances you have revealed to me, I would wager a bet that the reason you saw your car insurance premium rates drop so much is because of your move. Now, I’m sure you expected some difference due to a change in area, but you came off as surprised. The reason is that while changing locations but staying in the same setting (i.e. moving from one part of the city to another) may change your premiums slightly, if you move to a different setting (i.e. city to suburbs, suburbs to rural), you will see your rates change more drastically.

One of the reasons for this is because if you are in the city, your Michigan SR22 rates are higher because of crime and traffic. Traffic causes problems in that it makes the instance of car accidents much higher due to the proximity of cars on the road, whereas crime raises comprehensive claims due to car vandalism and theft. So, basically, if you want to happen again, just move as far out into the middle of nowhere as you can.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.
