I already have auto insurance in Michigan. Is it advisable to change companies if I find one that has better average car insurance rates?

Here’s another thing that you need to look out for when changing policies. Make sure that there are no fees. If you change companies suddenly and unexpectedly, your present insurer could charge you fees for that. What this means is that when you plan to go to a different company, ask your current one what happens if you do.
