I am the owner of a Sterling Heights Michigan SR22 policy for non owners. I have been paying on this policy for several months, but the amount I pay just seems to high. How can a non owner driver save a buck?

Jim

Thanks for asking, Jim.

While I have to admit there are many times more ways for someone who has their own vehicle to save money on their car insurance, car insurance companies, especially ones that offer Sterling Heights Michigan policies for non owners, do not completely ignore those who operate vehicles which are not their own. A lot of the discounts and savings need vehicles, but there are still others open to you:

This is a simple one: pare down your coverage do the minimum that Michigan requires, and your Sterling Heights Michigan SR22 premiums will cost less

Switch companies for one of your insurances. If your auto insurance company offers life insurance, move your life insurance there, so you can get the multi policy saving

Compare rates online before settling for a non owner insurance company

Cheers,

Reader question:

My teen…I wish I didn’t even have to say it, it makes me so mad…has to get Michigan SR22 filed because he was caught driving drunk. I would love to take his car away from him, but I’m stuck because he has a job and if he doesn’t save money from his job, he loses college money, and I know it won’t help at all to punish him by making it harder for him to attend a good college. But I pay for his insurance now. How can I get this on the cheap?

Melanie

Great question, Melanie.

Sorry to hear you’re in that situation. I would be furious too. But, you have to make the best of it. To be honest, if I were in your position, I would just make him pay for his own insurance and let him walk to work. If the walk is to far, then I’d let him quit that job and find one closer. That way he doesn’t sacrifice anything.

Still, you might not be inclined to do that, so I’ll throw you a line. There is a way that you can lower your rates for Michigan SR22 insurance while still laying the hammer on him. He has a job and school? All right, so you make sure that every free moment he has is spent either studying or in class. Here’s what I mean.

A lot of Michigan SR22 companies have a discount for good students. This can be up to 25%–that’s a lot, eh? If your son can pull a B average, he can get this.

Secondly, he needs a defensive driving class anyway, so enroll him in one. Now, if he is already required to take one, then this won’t have any effect on the insurance premium of yours, but if he isn’t required, then you can get a discount.

Cheers,

Reader’s Question:

I already have auto insurance in Michigan. Is it advisable to change companies if I find one that has better average car insurance rates?

Phil

Detroit MI

Some people claim that switching to different companies saves money since you get lower average car insurance rates. Hopefully after reading this, you’ll understand what to do before changing insurance companies.

Before changing insurance companies in Michigan, get a good estimate on what it will cost you in the long run. There are insurance companies that tell you they will give you this rate but it doesn’t last until the end of your insurance policy. In the end, you get to pay a whole lot more. Study the policies well. Compute how much they cost not only when you buy them but also in the days and even years to come.

Studying policies will also inform you of the possible increases in your insurance. If there are any other things that you need to know then make sure that you do. Switching policies entail a lot of things and costs is just one part of it.

Here’s another thing that you need to look out for when changing policies. Make sure that there are no fees. If you change companies suddenly and unexpectedly, your present insurer could charge you fees for that. What this means is that when you plan to go to a different company, ask your current one what happens if you do. Changing companies may mean low average car insurance rates but the extra fees will balance it out.

Don’t think for a second that changing insurance policies simply means paying different fees. It’s not. Further, don’t be drawn into the mindset that just because a deal looks promising, it is the best deal out there for you. Remember, if its too good to be true, it probably isn’t.

In order to avail the most of what your insurance policy has to offer, get all the data or information so that you will know how much it costs. Being covered is a good practice, but always take advantage when you can to get the average car insurance rates that you want.

I am planning to move to Michigan from Arizona and I would like to know if my car insurance will be cheaper in Grand Rapids, Michigan?

Harold

Grand Rapids, MI

Auto insurance coverages are different in Arizona and Michigan. Lets start with the state of Arizona.

Arizona law requires that all automobiles driven in roadways needs to be covered with liability insurance with an insurance carrier licensed to do business in the state of Arizona. The minimum liability insurance in the state of Arizona is 15/30/10 and this means $15,000 for bodily injury liability per person up to $30,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage liability.

In the state of Michigan, the car insurance coverage that needs to be purchased are Personal Injury Protection (PIP), Property Protection (PPI) and Residual Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability Insurance (BI/PD). The Residual bodily injury and property damage liability (BI/PD) pays if you are found at fault, for any damages caused by a car accident up to the limits of your car insurance policy.

In Michigan, the minimum liability limits that needs to be purchased is 20/40/10. This coverage means $20,000 per person up to $40,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage liability. You have the option to purchase Residual bodily injury and property damage liability (BI/PD) for additional coverage.

It will still depend on different factors whether your car insurance rate is cheaper in Grand Rapids, Michigan than in Arizona. You can get car insurance quote here to have an idea what your car insurance rate will be when you move to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Good luck!

Reader’s Question:

If I get a ticket in Michigan will I get points on my Arizona license?

Morrison

Taylor, MI

Most states specifically state how they handle out of state infractions however I could not see a direct answer for how Arizona does it.

It is possible that it will eventually appear on your MI driving record. If the infraction substantially corresponds to an infraction of a MI law, then the offense will be posted to your driving record and points will be assessed as required by the MI Vehicle Code. If the ticket is for a violation for which a suspension would have been given if the ticket had been received in MI, then a suspension will be imposed after the posting of the ticket, allowing time for due process and the sending of a notification letter. Most states provide ticket information to the motorist’s home state. MI law requires that the same action be taken for tickets received out-of-state as those received in MI, therefore, points and suspensions may be imposed.

I suggest you contact the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles directly for an answer to your inquiry.

Reader’s Question:

I have a drivers license in Michigan but my question is, do I need to get car insurance as well?

Maria

Detroit MI

According to Michigan car insurance laws, you are required to have no-fault insurance certificate in your car or carry it with you when you operate a vehicle. Failure to provide proof of car insurance when asked by a police officer will result to suspension of your drivers license. Until proof of car insurance is shown, your drivers license will remain suspended. You may also be required to prove that your car is insured for not less than 6 months and pay the fine of $50.

When you borrow a car, it is best to make sure that the car that you are driving is insured and you are listed on the policy to abide the Michigan car insurance laws. So if you live in a household with automobiles hat you occasionally or frequently drive, you will need to be listed on that policy you the coverage will be extended to you. If you so not have a car but want to be covered when you operate other people’s vehicles, you can get non owners insurance policy instead.

A non owners insurance policy provide liability protection to drivers who are at fault in an accident but do not own a car. Non-owners policies can typically include Liability, Medical Payments, and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverages.

Reader’s Question:

My husband is starting a home-based business. Is it required for us to get commercial car insurance in Michigan? Take note that we are going to do business at home only and will be using our car for purchasing stuff needed for our business. Thanks!

Dorothy

Detroit, MI

I am not sure what the answer is since you guys are still on the verge of starting a home-based business. But I will tell you that in some cases, most home-based entrepreneur who are using their car once a week for the purpose of transporting goods or supplies are converting their personal car insurance to commercial car insurance in Michigan just to play it safe. It will surely be a big problem for the car owner to be caught into an accident and the car insurance company found out that they are using their vehicle for business purposes. It will surely pose a problem when getting claims, since commercial car insurance have totally different set of policies.

In most cases, there are different rules when it comes to car insurance in different states, I advice you to ask a car insurance broker in your area or your car insurance company if you need to replace your existing policy so you are not risking your current insurance status.

If you are not tight on budget, you could pay the extra premium and go for commercial car insurance, it will surely be helpful and you wont be thinking if you are breaking the rules or not. Anyways, acquiring commercial car insurance is basically the same as getting a normal one. You can also save by shopping around and comparing quotes.

Reader’s Question:

I have to be on my own now. I used to be under my mom’s insurance policy. I wonder if I could ever get a cheap car insurance here in Michigan. What are the components of a basic liability only car insurance policy in Michigan?

Kate

Detroit, MI

You must first start with Michigan’s minimum car insurance requirements for you to get cheap car insurance in Michigan. All cars, except motorcycles and commercial motor vehicles, must carry no-fault insurance. You can’t actually register your car in Michigan without first having no-fault car insurance. This no-fault insurance provides car insurance coverage for you as a policyholder.

There are actually three kinds of car insurance coverage required by Michigan. They are personal injury protection (PIP), bodily and property damage (BI/PD) and property protection insurance (PPI). A basic car insurance policy in Michigan covers these three components.

In the event your car is damaged or stolen, none of these car insurance requirements provide insurance coverage. In Michigan, you should purchase comprehensive insurance coverage and collision insurance coverage in order to insure your car in the event of damage or theft. Comprehensive car insurance coverage provides coverage for theft of your car or its components and contents, while collision car insurance coverage provides coverage for damages to your car.

Michigan drivers are able to get cheap car insurance when they opt to purchase only the three components of a basic car insurance policy which are PIP, BIPD, and PPI car insurance coverage requirements. Comprehensive car insurance coverage and collision car insurance coverage are not normally required of Michigan drivers unless they have borrowed money to purchase their cars and their lenders require those coverages.

There are many other ways to get cheap car insurance without simply purchasing the minimum car insurance coverage requirements. You can shop around and ask any car insurance company or agent about the various discounts for good drivers, good students, driver education course completion, and multi-line policies that they offer and if you are eligible.
