Will Traffic Ticket In Michigan Count on Car Insurance Points?
Reader’s Question:
If I get a ticket in Michigan will I get points on my Arizona license?
Morrison
Taylor, MI
Most states specifically state how they handle out of state infractions however I could not see a direct answer for how Arizona does it.
It is possible that it will eventually appear on your MI driving record. If the infraction substantially corresponds to an infraction of a MI law, then the offense will be posted to your driving record and points will be assessed as required by the MI Vehicle Code. If the ticket is for a violation for which a suspension would have been given if the ticket had been received in MI, then a suspension will be imposed after the posting of the ticket, allowing time for due process and the sending of a notification letter. Most states provide ticket information to the motorist’s home state. MI law requires that the same action be taken for tickets received out-of-state as those received in MI, therefore, points and suspensions may be imposed.
I suggest you contact the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles directly for an answer to your inquiry.
Will Parking Tickets Increase Student Car Insurance Rates in Michigan?
Reader’s Question:
I am a student at the University of Michigan. I got parking tickets from the parking services of the University. Will these tickets increase my insurance even if I pay them on time?
Ben
Ann Arbor, MI
Whether your insurance rates will increase or not depends upon your insurance provider’s guidelines and how
they assign points. Although, for some companies, a single parking ticket will not increase in insurance rates, multiple tickets or tickets that are not paid which result in license suspension, your rates will probably increase.
If the parking ticket issued by the University’s Parking System is reported to MI DMV, this will appear on your driving record and will be seen by your insurance provider. Your insurance rates may be affected depending on the rating system of the company. You may want to verify with the university
if they report this or not. If so, you can then check the rating system of the insurance company.
How Long Does an OWI Stay On My Record in Michigan?
Reader’s Question:
How long does an OWI remain on my driving record to my insurance company in Flint, Michigan?
Murphy
Flint, MI
The Michigan Financial and Insurance services Insurance Eligibility fact sheet states that insurance carriers can turn you down for car insurance if within the past three years you have been found guilty of DUI or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohols.
Since your OWI should be on your Michigan driving history for a minimum of ten years if an insurance carrier asks you about violations in on your motor vehicle record or if you have been convicted of such an offense then you will need to tell your insurance company of your OWI conviction. If you fail to do so and they later see it on your MVR then the car insurance quote amount you were given will likely be inaccurate since you did not provide them all the information they need to give you an accurate insurance rate quote.
I Live in Michigan But Got a Ticket In Another State
Reader’s Question:
I have a Michigan drivers license and I received a traffic violation in Tennessee. Does Tennessee forward violation information with Michigan?
Henry
Grand Rapids, MI
Neither Tennessee nor Michigan are members of the Driver’s License Compact (DLC) which requires member states to report back to the licensing state of a driver convictions for traffic violations that one received out of state. But even without being part of the DLC any longer, the Tennessee Department of Safety has decided to report tickets back to Michigan if you are cited for a moving violation in TN with an out-of-state driver’s license.
The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) site has information regarding out of state tickets that may still be added to your MI driving record.
So while both Michigan and Tennessee are not members of the DLC it seems that the TN traffic court will inform the MI SOS about your traffic ticket if you are found guilty and convicted of it. Michigan will then put the out of state traffic violation on your driving record and assess points if required by the Michigan Vehicle Code.
