Reader’s Question:

I will be staying in Clinton, Michigan, will I be needing US drivers license to insure my vehicle for just three to six months? Can I use my international drivers license to drive in Michigan?

Robert

Clinton, MI

If you are going to purchase an insurance policy in Clinton Michigan you should expect to have an US driver’s license or obtain one for you to be be insured in the US.

It may be possible auto insurance companies that will sell you a policy you in the United States using your international drivers license, but many insurance carriers would require you to get a drivers license in the state you live in, (in your case, in Michigan) before buying car insurance or within thirty days after getting insurance coverage.

I am not aware of any specific insurance company that allow this but when getting a car insurance quote online (you can begin here by typing your zip code! it is free!) and check if there is an option to list if you have an international license or you can shop around in Clinton Michigan for insurance carriers that allow this.

Some insurance carriers will likely require you to have a drivers license or in the process of getting a US drivers license. It is wise to start getting car insurance quotes now so you may know how much car insurance you should expect to pay when you get here and purchase insurance.

Reader’s Question:

My boyfriend who lives in MI is purchasing a vehicle to leave in FL for me to drive. Can I buy a non-owner policy to drive this vehicle without him putting any insurance on this car in his name up in Michigan?

Jane

Ann Arbor, MI

It could be possible to insure the vehicle that your boyfriend is permitting you to drive, even it you do not have any insurable interest. Not all providers will permit this but Esurance has polices that permit for people to insure their friend’s car for comprehensive and collision coverages. This is unlike non-owners insurance policy which is basically is only liability insurance and intended for only occasional drivers of a car.

Some insurance providers, such as Esurance, require you to have care, custody and control of a car in order to be the named insured. Though a vehicle must be registered and insured in the state where the vehicle is kept which may cause difficulties due to you and the car being in FL while the owner/friend is in MI.

Non Owner Auto Insurance in Michigan

Reader’s Question:

Are you required to carry some type of car insurance in the state of Michigan if you have a driver license, even if you don’t own a vehicle? Is that what non-owner insurance is?

Rachel

Flint, MI

The Michigan Secretary of State states that the owners of passenger vehicles, vans, and light trucks must purchase Michigan no-fault insurance before registering their car. Out-of-state insurance policies can’t be used to meet Michigan insurance requirements for registering a car.

You are required by the Michigan law to keep your Michigan no-fault insurance certificate in your car or carry it with you when you operate a vehicle. If you can’t show proof of insurance to a police officer, the court may order the Secretary of State to suspend your driver license. Until proof of insurance is provided, the Secretary of State will not renew, transfer, or replace your car’s license plate. You may be required to show proof that the vehicle is insured for not less than 6 months and pay $50, plus any other fees required by Michigan law. The license plate may also be canceled if proof of insurance is not shown.

Reader question:

I am the owner of a Sterling Heights Michigan SR22 policy for non owners. I have been paying on this policy for several months, but the amount I pay just seems to high. How can a non owner driver save a buck?

Jim

Thanks for asking, Jim.

While I have to admit there are many times more ways for someone who has their own vehicle to save money on their car insurance, car insurance companies, especially ones that offer Sterling Heights Michigan policies for non owners, do not completely ignore those who operate vehicles which are not their own. A lot of the discounts and savings need vehicles, but there are still others open to you:

  • This is a simple one: pare down your coverage do the minimum that Michigan requires, and your Sterling Heights Michigan SR22 premiums will cost less
  • Switch companies for one of your insurances. If your auto insurance company offers life insurance, move your life insurance there, so you can get the multi policy saving
  • Compare rates online before settling for a non owner insurance company

Cheers,
